241,740 individuals declared bankrupt, as of April

AS OF April, 241,740 individuals were declared bankrupt, said Finance Deputy Minister Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai.

He said, 52,917 of the cases were in Selangor, and 42,843 in the Federal Territory, adding that 70 per cent of the total number of cases involved men.

Of the number, he said the highest involved car loans at 25.21 per cent, followed by personal loans (13.15 per cent), house loans (12.31 per cent), business loans (11.26 per cent) and credit card (4.9 per cent).
Lim was speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby here today.

He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's recent announcement that the government would review the Bankruptcy Act 1967 which was regarded as too stringent and a burden to the people, was timely.

"I support the proposal. I hope with the amendment, banks or financial institutions would look for the borrower first, instead of going after the guarantor and declare them bankrupt," he added.

Lim said a study should also be carried out on the rise in bankruptcy cases involving car loans, and on the increase in the number of young bankrupts.

"Bankrupts aged below 25 are on the increase...we do not want them to go bankrupt after working for merely two to three years. The conditions for a discharge ought to be relaxed to enable young individuals who had been declared bankrupt to have a second chance, particularly in business," said the deputy minister.  -- Bernama

YIP KUM FOOK (MCA GOMBAK) BERCAKAP BOHONG DAN TIPU WANG RAKYAT
KUALA LUMPUR: The Chinese community has been won over by Barisan Nasional's ability to maintain stability, peace and harmony.
Unlike the opposition coalition, BN component parties stay united and learn from their mistakes to become stronger and well prepared for the election, said MCA Gombak chief Datuk Yip Kam Fook.
He said the Chinese community's support for the BN now is different from what it was in 2008.
"Back then they wanted change and they gave the opposition a chance, but the quickly regretted their decision as their representatives did not do anything for them.
"They see oppositionleaders bickering with each other and coming up with conflicting statements", said Yip during a 1Malaysia dinner organised by MCA Kampung Kuala Ampang in Hulu Klang last night.
More than 2,000 people cheered when Gombak parliamentary seat candidate Datuk Dr Rahman Ismail and Hulu Klang state candidate Rahim Kamarudin walked into the tent, accompanied by Yip.
